TCEQ Class B Surface Water License Practice Test

The measurement device specifically used to monitor turbidity in systems serving more than 10,000 people is a turbidimeter. A turbidimeter measures the cloudiness or haziness of a liquid, which is caused by suspended particles. This is particularly important in water treatment and distribution systems, as high turbidity levels can indicate the presence of contaminants and can affect both water quality and treatment efficiency. Regulatory requirements often mandate that public water systems monitor turbidity to ensure the safety and quality of drinking water, making the use of a turbidimeter essential for compliance in larger systems.

Barometers measure atmospheric pressure and are not related to water quality, while hydrometers assess the specific gravity of liquids and flow meters measure the flow rate of liquids. Thus, they do not serve the purpose of turbidity monitoring in water systems.
